This innovative program is one of only a few community-based cardiac rehabilitation programs and the only one of its kind in the Alberta Heartland area. This program is intended to improve access to cardiac education and supervised exercise.
Why was the program developed?
In 2008, approximately 5,500 people in the Alberta Heartland area were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, for example, heart attacks, heart failure, high blood pressure and stroke. Only about 3% of those attended the CR programs available in Edmonton. Alberta Heartland's CR program brings the services closer to home so that more people can regain their strength and endurance and improve their quality of life.
What can I expect?
This 12-week program includes 6 education classes focused on diet, exercise and lifestyle, as well as, an individualized exercise program based on the results of your 6-Minute Walk test. This CR program requires 2 hours on Thursday afternoons with your commitment to take what you learn and apply it to your day-to-day life to ensure maximum benefits.
